Everett Alvarez Jr. Endowed Scholarship

This scholarship honors Everett Alvarez, Jr. ’60. Everett Alvarez was born in 1937 in Salinas, California. He attended Santa Clara University on an academic scholarship and graduated in 1960 with a degree in Electrical Engineering. After graduating, he joined the United States Navy and became a pilot. In 1964, he was shot down during the Vietnamese War and spent over eight-and-a-half years a prisoner of war.

Alvarez retired from the U. S. Navy in 1980 with the rank of Commander. In addition to his distinguished military services, Mr. Alvarez is a lawyer, author, entrepreneur, and executive. He also had an exceptional public service career as Deputy Director of the Peace Corps, Deputy Administrator of the Veterans Administration, and Chairman of the CARES Commission. He has a high school, a U.S. Post Office, house projects, and a city park named in his honor.

In 2008, Mr. Alvarez was honored as one of the 25 greatest public servants by the Council for Excellence in Government. Mr. Alvarez has been honored as a distinguished SCU alumnus for public service and is a lifetime member of the University’s Board of Fellows, a group dedicated to the development of Santa Clara, its students, its activities and its goals.

This scholarship was established in 2015 on the 55th reunion of the Class of 1960 through a dollar-for-dollar match of gifts given by the members of the Class of 1960 during their 55th reunion year.

Impact

The Everett Alvarez Jr. Endowed Scholarship Fund shall provide need-based scholarships for undergraduate students, with a preference for veterans.
