The Heffernan Family has always considered education a top priority and schooling at Santa Clara a family tradition. Frank graduated from Santa Clara University in 1952 and his father Frank Sr., graduated from SCU in 1908. The third generation of SCU Heffernan graduates include three of Frank and his wife, Lenore’s children.

While at SCU, Frank going the University swim team and the University water polo team with his friends. Frank graduated with a history degree but pursued a life as a businessman after college. Frank and Lenore were always involved in alumni activities and Frank even served on the Board of Regents.

Up until his passing in 2017 he and his classmates would get together regularly to catch up. Frank attended SCU at a time when being 17 in college was rare. Half of Frank’s classmates were just beginning their college careers having returned from serving in WWII.

The Heffernan family created this scholarship to connect more deserving young people with Santa Clara. Frank was known for saying “My family is really connected to SCU and I have been fortunate in business. I thought it was appropriate that I let someone else have the experience I had. You know without question, my heart is at Santa Clara.”
