Norman Martin, S.J., Endowed Scholarship

Fr. Norman Martin was a dedicated alumnus, professor and administrator at Santa Clara University. After joining the Los Gatos Jesuit Novitiate in 1935 and graduating from Santa Clara University in 1937, Fr. Martin spent the next several years living abroad. He was ordained in Buenos Aires on December 20, 1947. After receiving his master’s and doctorate in Latin American History, Fr. Martin returned to teach at Santa Clara University in 1958. Eventually, he became an Assistant to the University President and worked in Public Relations. During his career, Fr. Martin had been on the board of trustees at SCU and O’Connor Hospital, and chaplain for SCU’s Catala Club and SCU’s Board of Regents. Fr. Martin passed away February 5, 2006 after 70 years as a Jesuit and 58 years as a Catholic priest.

The Norman Martin, S.J. Endowed Scholarship was established in 1982 by his secretary, Elaine Sharp, and her husband, Bill Sharp. The scholarship has also been supported by many of Fr. Martin’s friends over the years.

Impact

The Norman Martin, S.J., Endowed Scholarship Fund was established to provide financial assistance for deserving undergraduate students from middle-income families.
