The Janice and Thomas Berthold Engineering Scholarship Fund

Thomas Berthold is a patent attorney at his firm, the Law Office of Thomas R. Berthold, and has been licensed for over 40 years. Previously, he worked in intellectual property at Hitachi Global Storage Technologies, Inc. and IBM. Mr. Berthold graduated from Santa Clara University School of Law as well as the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

Janice “Jan” Berthold is a senior vice president at Heffernan Insurance Brokers. Janice Berthold is one of Santa Clara County’s leading insurance industry professionals. Janice Berthold currently serves as a worker’s compensation advisor, commercial insurance broker, and Senior Vice President for Heffernan Insurance Brokers, where she is a member of the Million Dollar Club. She is the author of two books: Getting to Zero (focusing on helping companies reduce workers compensation costs and minimize risk) and The 80/20 CFO.

Both Thomas and Jan are members of the Board of Governors for Opportunity International, a nonprofit working to end global poverty by creating and sustaining jobs.

On Nov. 17, 2010, Janice and Thomas established the Janice and Thomas Berthold Engineering Scholarship Fund to support undergraduates who have declared a major in the School of Engineering. Thomas’ experience at Santa Clara’s School of Law prepared him for his career as a patent attorney and Janice and Thomas wanted to provide a similar opportunity for students.

Impact

The Janice and Thomas Berthold Engineering Scholarship Fund was established to support undergraduate students in the School of Engineering who have demonstrated financial need and have as their major one of the following degree programs: bioengineering, civil engineering, computer science and engineering (BSCSE only), electrical engineering or mechanical engineering. Preference will be given to students who have consistently maintained a high academic level of performance.
