The Ronald and Shirley Saddoris Endowed Scholarship in Memory of Father Carl Hayn, S.J.

The Ronald and Shirley Saddoris Endowed Scholarship in Memory of Father Carl Hayn, S.J. was created on September 23, 2019 by Ronald and Shirley Saddoris.

Ronald and Shirley were friends and supporters of Santa Clara University since 1986. The couple were friends with Father Carl Hayn, S.J., a Physics professor at the University.

Fr. Hayn joined the new Department of Physics at the (then) University of Santa Clara in 1955. He taught full time for more than 50 years and served as president of the Northern California/Nevada section of the American Association of Physics Teachers. Even towards the end of his career he continued to publish scholarly articles in journals such as the American Journal of Physics and The Physics Teacher. He retired from teaching in 2006 but worked in the department until 2012 – writing, tutoring students, and receiving visitors.

Shirley would come to campus once a month to have lunch with Fr. Hayn.

Impact

The Ronald and Shirley Saddoris Endowed Scholarship in Memory of Father Carl Hayn, S.J. was established to provide scholarship for undergraduate students, with a preference for students who are physics majors with the biophyrics track, as Santa Clara University does not have a biophysics major at this time.
