Juan Diego Scholarship Endowment

Established on April 1, 2001 by Daniel and Barbara Mount to provide financial assistance to undergraduate students who are members of Sacred Heart Parish in San Jose, CA and who demonstrate good academic standing and financial need. Selected by committee, get the name from Financial Aid.
The University made a commitment to cover full tuition for these students, at this time (2020) this fund only cover a small portion.
Per Josef Casteneda-Liles (University Relations and part of the scholarship committee) "if this exact criteria is not fulfilled, the scholarship is awarded to an undergraduate, preferably first-generation college student, with financial need from the greater San Jose area. Recipients are not restricted to U.S. citizens. Those interested in the San Juan Diego scholarship have to fill out a separate application (in addition to the Common App). A committee, composed of prior San Juan Scholarship recipients, current recipients, representatives from the parish community, the parish priest, and at least one SCU staff representative (me for several years), interviews applicants that have been accepted to SCU and selects the recipient. The scholarship was originally created over 20 years ago through the advocacy of the late Father Mateo Sheedy, then pastor of Sacred Heart Parish, in collaboration with Former Provost Stephen Privett, S.J. “Padre Mateo,” as he was known by the community, wanted to build a bridge between the Sacred Heart community and SCU, increasing the number of community members that could benefit from a Santa Clara education and return to the community to help other first-generation students and their families. The scholarship is partially supported by a small endowment (Juan Diego Scholarship Endowment) but the rest is pulled from another general need-based fund or funds. I did have a brief conversation with Richard Toomey years ago in which he explained the funding of the scholarship, but could not tell you what fund or funds are used."
